2.“GoodFellas” (1990) Directed by Martin Scorsese
This list would be lacking if we didn’t add a film by the Academy Award winning director, Martin Scorsese. If you’re looking for an entertaining gangster classic, this is a must see. If you’re already a fan of his work, you might want to check out one of his latest: “The Irishman” (2019). Scorsese’s last film to date, this stands out for its use of digital rejuvenation technology and was produced by one of the digital platforms listed above.
3.“Belle Époque” (1992) Directed by Fernando Trueba
Winner of 9 Goya awards, “Belle Époque” is one of the most awarded Spanish films in history. It is worth noting the magnificent performances of the great actresses Miriam Díaz-Aroca, Ariadna Gil, Maribel Verdú and Penélope Cruz. This acclaimed film is a witty Spanish Comedy.
4.“Children of Men” (2006) Directed by Alfonso Cuarón
This futuristic film is hailed for its critically acclaimed and thought-provoking script and performance. The plot tells of a world where humanity has evolved towards a state of infertility that could lead to the extinction of the species. A relevant film in this day and age, this choice is a well-done science fiction film.
5.“Zodiac” (2007) Directed by David Fincher
Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo share the screen in “Zodiac”, all with the same goal, to dismantle a serial killer while conflict is generated between police and journalistic investigations. This high tension thriller will keep you in suspense and intrigued until the very end, not to mention, the story is based on real life events.
6.“Gran Torino” (2009) Directed by Clint Eastwood
Directed, produced and also starring himself, Clint Eastwood won the hearts of many with this feature film. Marked by a great character evolution, it was, in part, a beautiful farewell for Eastwood, who makes us reflect on old age and our own ideas. Choose this film if you want to enjoy one of the best dramas of the century.
7.“Black Swan” (2011) Directed by Darren Aronofsky
“Black Swan” is exceptional, in part, for Natalie Portman’s spectacular performance, in addition to the intensity shown in the film’s direction. It teaches us that what is born as art can also become a great obsession. If you’ve already seen this film, we suggest this Japanese animation thriller: “Perfect Blue” (1998) by Satoshi Kon. Both of these films are perfect for fans of psychological drama.
8.“Room” (2016) Directed by Lenny Abrahamson
If we’re talking about confinement, we need to talk about this movie. Brie Larson (well-known for her role in “Captain Marvel”) fights for her own survival and that of her son, who was born within four walls as the result of his mother’s abduction. The love generated in this story between mother and son makes this a remarkable work to be seen, especially fans of familial emotions.
9.“Between Two Waters” (2018) Directed by Isaki Lacuesta
This Spanish documentary mixes reality and fiction. A true expert in transferring the deepest emotions of human beings to the big screen, Isaki rescues his two protagonists from “The Legend of Time”, one of the most beautiful and important works of Spanish cinema. Choose this film if you want to enjoy Spanish cinema in its purest form.
10.“Parasites” (2019) Directed by Bong Joon-ho
One of biggest cinema hits of its day, “Parasites” had to be included in the list. Winner of four Oscars in 2020 including ‘Best Film’, this story brings us closer to South Korean cinema through three key pieces: drama, suspense and black humour. We highly recommend this film that will leave you anything but indifferent.
