5 museums in Seville to visit

Seville is one of the most visited cities in Andalusia and has also recently been chosen by Lonely Planet as “the best city to travel in 2018”. No one doubts about the beauty of this city in which art is breathed in every corner, but in which we can also find art and history in its different and interesting museums.

Sevilla and its museums

Seville has a long history with civilizations which have passed as the Islamic, Tartésica, Visigoth or Romanesque, which have left a rich and varied heritage. As a witness of this history but also as it shows its cultural dynamism we find in Seville different museums that house different collections ranging from historical objects to works of contemporary art. Here we present a selection of the most relevant Sevillian museums.

Museum of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts in Seville is installed in the former convent of La Merced dating from the 17th century. Inside it we can find magnificent collections of works by the great Spanish masters such as Murillo, Zurbarán, Goya and Velázquez. We can also find sculptures and works of Flemish and Italian painting.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Seville is located in a former pavilion of the 1929 Universal exhibition in Plaza América, inside the Maria Luisa Park. The collection that houses this museum is considered to be one of the most important archaeological collections in Andalusia because it contains a majority of objects of the Roman excavation of italics.

Museum of Arts and customs

Neighbour of the aforementioned Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Arts and customs is located in a magnificent Mudejar palace built by Aníbal González in 1917. This museum is mainly dedicated to the preservation of the regional memory and within its collection we find objects that represent the social history of Andalusia: Clothing, goldsmith, furniture…

Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Art

The Andalusian Museum of Contemporary Art was created in 1990 and is located in the former monastery of La Cartuja. Its mission is to promote contemporary art and modern artistic creation through its permanent collection and the different temporary exhibitions. It also hosts different events such as jazz or flamenco concerts.

Flamenco Dance Museum

The Flamenco Dance Museum was founded by the famous flamenco dancer Cristina Hoyos and is located in the well-known neighborhood of Santa Cruz. In this small museum we can understand the history of this art, already declared by UNESCO as ‘ intangible Cultural heritage of humanity ‘, and we will also be able to attend any of the shows that they organise.
